BSO IMPROVES EFFICIENCY OF DATA MANAGEMENT FOR PGS

Petroleum Geo-Services is a marine geophysical company providing a broad range of seismic and reservoir services, including acquisition, processing, interpretation, and field evaluation. The company also possesses the world’s most extensive multi-client data library. PGS operates on a global scale with its headquarters in Lysaker, Norway. Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) plays a critical role in reshaping the global oil exploration market. They selected BSO Network Solutions to provide a 1-gigabit connection between London and Cyberjaya.

Information and data are at the very heart of the highly competitive Oil & Gas market. The need to transmit information in the fastest way possible without any interruptions is critical; one interruption can cost millions.

As one of the few markets which is truly global, the oil exploration industry is highly dependent on the ability to allocate resources effectively to ensure a 24-hour service across the globe.

With a presence in more than 25 countries, regional centres in London, Houston and Singapore, as well as a head office in Oslo, PGS offers a broad range of products and services worldwide. These include seismic and electromagnetic services, data acquisition, processing, reservoir analysis/interpretation and multi-client library data.

CHALLENGES

With offices needing online access in three separate time zones, PGS realised that they needed to find a way to balance the load between its data centres in London, Houston and Cyberjaya, Malaysia.

The benefit of achieving this is that it would allow spare capacity in the servers to be used, either when downtime occurred or when excessive workloads created a backlog in the local geography. It also meant that PGS could prepare more effective business continuity options in the event of a disaster in one of the locations.

THE SOLUTION

The PGS team spent a great deal of time looking for the right high-speed connection between its London and Houston offices. Having already set up similar links from both London and Houston, they were keen to establish a connection to Cyberjaya which would allow them to link all three of their regional centres so that they could transfer data quickly between them.

After a thorough selection process, PGS chose BSO Network Solutions to provide a 1-gigabit connection between London and Cyberjaya. The project itself went live in the summer of 2012. Their plan was to move data around in bulk between the three offices to enable them to more effectively allocate resources.

In doing so, and in balancing the load across three separate time zones, PGS found that their spare capacity could be used much more efficiently.

With a view to developing a long-term partnership, PGS and BSO Network Solutions agreed on a 1-gigabit connection between London and Cyberjaya. It was essential for the company to work with BSO Network Solutions for this part in order to have access to real experts, thereby letting them carry on with their core business.

RESULTS AND NEXT STEPS

PGS has learnt to appreciate the responsiveness of the BSO Network Solutions team, who quickly understood their expectations and adapted to meet their requirements.
